History

Although settlements in the area existed as early 8500BC, and during the reign of the Roman Empire, Edinburgh wasn't founded until the early 12th century by King David I, when it became a royal burgh. It soon grew to become the primary settlement in Scotland, and by the mid-1300s it had become Scotland's capital. In 1544, during the Rough Wooing, English soldiers tried to burn the city down, but the city recovered.
